Shared 3D Workspaces

The literature on Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) includes considerable research on 2D shared spaces and metaphors. Much less exists concerning 3D shared spaces and metaphors. This report defines terminology relevant to shared 3D workspaces, summarizes a number of areas within the literature on 2D and 3D interaction and collaboration, and identifies pertinent issues for further research. Among the issues identified are: - Can a 2D shared space metaphor be extended to 3D? - How is interaction different in 3D than in 2D? - Can metaphors for single-user 3D interaction be extended to shared 3D interaction?
