Orientation Day for Grad Students
Welcome to Computer Science!
We hold an Orientation Day for incoming graduate students on the first or second Tuesday of September, typically on the same day as Imagine UBC, which replaces the first day of classes. The event runs from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM. During the day, we will provide an overview of the Computer Science Department, introduce key resources and services, and share practical advice to help you adapt to your new academic and social environment. We hope this orientation will help you make a smooth transition into graduate studies at UBC and connect with fellow students, faculty, and staff.
All incoming students are expected to attend the day. We look forward to seeing you!
Schedule of the Day (subject to minor tweaks):
08:30 – 09:30 Breakfast
09:30 – 10:00 Intros from dept and CSGSA
10:00 – 10:30 Short talks by various individuals from the dept.
10:30 – 12:00 Scavenger Hunt
12:00 – 14:00 Lunch
14:00 – 15:00 Presentation and Q&A on MSc, PhD/PhD-Track programs, award application, etc.
15:00 – 15:30 Introduction to co-op option
15:30 – 16:00 Coffee Break
16:00 – 17:00 Talks from various research labs – all short and hopefully entertaining!
17:00 – 18:00 CSGSA take over to chat with students without faculty (e.g., grad course impressions)
18:00 onwards CSGSA social events (optional but encouraged to join)
