Co-op & Careers

Career development is an important aspect of your university education. Whether you want to be in the academia or in the industry, the Computer Science Department provides various programs and career events to help you explore your options and build up your portfolio.

Career Events

Career events can be organized by the department, by various student clubs and by UBC Career Centre. Follow our newsletters, social media posts and announcements to find out what is best for you. Here are examples of events that help students learn more about individual companies, the ins-and-outs of particular Computer Science areas, and to build up their career portfolio:

Co-op Program

Co-operative Education (Co-op) integrates students' academic education (classroom-based learning) with relevant, supervised and paid work experience (work-based learning). UBC Science Co-op placements are typically held in three annual work terms: Fall (Sept – Dec), Winter (Jan – Apr) and Summer (May – Aug). Students will lengthen their degree when participating in this optional program. Check out the program for their info session dates, application deadlines and application requirements. For further information, contact the Computer Science Co-op office at cscoop@sciencecoop.ubc.ca.

Research as a Career

Perhaps you'd like to explore graduate studies to better prepare for the industry, or to develop a career in the academia. See these research-based courses and opportunities in the CS Department, as well as opportunities throughout UBC, to get a taste of research and to build up your research portfolio.

Job Boards

Most jobs are hidden and the opportunities are unearthed through human connections. To build up your social connections, participate in different student clubs, volunteer on and off campus, and have close ties with your professors.

There are job boards where you can search for part-time, full-time, and volunteer opportunities while being a UBC student:
