The award and fee numbers above are estimated based on 2024 values and may be subject to small adjustments. Please see the subsection below for further details.

Explanations

Standard Minimum: The department guarantees funding for PhD students for five years and MSc students for two years at at least the standard minimum levels. Support is based on a combination of teaching assistantship (TA), research assistantships (RA), fellowship funding, etc. For programs that go beyond these dates, students and supervisors should discuss what funding (if any) is available.

Tuition Award (FoS): The FoS Tuition Award, provided by the Faculty of Science (FoS), is available for MSc students for one year and PhD students for four years. PhD-Track students are typically covered by the Tuition Award for one year at the start of their programs (before transfer to the PhD) and for an additional four years after transferring to the PhD program.

*MSc Tuition Award (FoS): For MSc students, the FoS Tuition Awards are limited to the first year. From the second year onward, students are responsible for MSc tuition fees, resulting in a net income of $24,987 (domestic) or $23,929 (international).

PAEIPA Award (PhD Students only):  The PAEIPA Award provides $1,500 per year for international students in any year; $1,260 per year for domestic students paying full tuition (Years 1–3); and $585 per year for domestic students paying continuing tuition (Years 4–6). Please note that these amounts are subject to change; see details at https://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/presidents-academic-excellence-initiative-phd-award.

Student Fees: These fees include several components such as AMS/GSS Health and Dental Insurance, the transportation pass (U-Pass), and more. Please see details at https://vancouver.calendar.ubc.ca/fees/student-fees

Cost-of-Living Adjustments: Each year, the guaranteed standard minimum amounts are adjusted based on cost-of-living increases, according to a weighted (12-month) average of three CPI metrics released by the BC government: Rent CPI (50%), Food CPI (25%) and Overall CPI (25%). For this year, the adjustment was 5.3%.
