17 new fellowships earned by grad students year-to-date

An impressive 17 new fellowships, totalling almost $435K, have been earned by highly deserving UBC Computer Science graduate students so far this calendar year (2021) to recognize their accomplishments and support their academic goals.

Of those receiving the awards, 13 are pursuing a doctorate and 4 are studying for their MSc.

The majority of the fellowships were awarded by NSERC (National Sciences and Engineering Research Council), as well as from UBC’s 4YF program which provides support of at least $18,200 per year plus tuition for up to four years of doctoral studies. A few of the other awards earned this calendar year came from Amazon Go Fellowships.

The number of fellowships being granted to our students has been on the rise each successive year, thanks to the continued influx of exceptional students.

A variety of fellowships (they each have different criteria) are widely available to students who are pursuing their graduate studies. The gift not only funds continued studies and research, but endorses the recipient’s academic achievement, providing even more leverage for advancing beyond their peers.

With computer science being one of the fastest growing fields in the world, the competition is fierce and the demand for accomplished, research-oriented graduates continues to increase in Vancouver and around the globe. As UBC Computer Science preps its grads for the future, grad students can and should be applying for one or more of the many fellowships available, as a substantial contributor to their success plan.
