The UBC Department of Computer Science, established in May 1968, is one of the top computer science departments in North America. Recognized internationally for excellence in research and teaching with a conscious focus on interdisciplinary programs, the Department encourages diversity both within its community and areas of study, and plays a leadership role in research, teaching and outreach activities to champion the understanding and integration of Computer Science within all aspects of society.

Our faculty have research collaborations across the department, across the campus, and internationally. Although the department is large, its research group structure gives our faculty and graduate researchers a strong sense of community and encourages collaboration.

Our graduate students are vitally involved in the department; student representatives actively participate in departmental committees and meetings, and contribute to the decision making and shaping of the department's future. The Computer Science Graduate Student Association (CGSA) gives a clear voice to the student interests, and is incredibly active in organizing regular events and social activities, including informal seminars, parties, and BBQs.

Some facts about our department:

  • Our faculty and students actively interact with industry in numerous fields. Via internships, consulting and the launching of new companies, they contribute to the state-of-the-art in environmental monitoring, energy prediction, software, cloud computing, search engines, social networks, advertising, e-commerce, electronic trading, entertainment games, special effects in movies, robotics, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, and more.
  • Students graduating from the CS MSc program and faculty have produced some of the most successful games and photography apps for the iPhone and iPad, including award-winning Osmos, ColorSplash and AutoStitch.
  • UBC has one of the strongest graphics groups in the world. It has had significant impact in the entertainment games and movie industry.
  • The Department of Computer Science had the highest impact factor amongst Computer Science Departments in Canada from 2003-07, according to ScienceWatch.
  • The Department of Computer Science consistently fields a top team for “the Battle of the Brains,” the Association for Computing Machinery’s world programming contest. A team from the Department has made it to the world finals for seven consecutive years. In 2006, the team was 13th overall.
  • Dr. Alan Mackworth of the Department proposed and built the world’s first soccer-playing robots, which led to the development of robot soccer as the premier global platform for multi-agent robotic research through the International RoboCup Foundation.
