Communications Skills Workshop: "Communicate With Impact"

Date

(This session is available at no charge but only to a limited number of students. To reserve your seat, please respond to http://doodle.com/poll/xmhaw6hmpyhmcu3i no later than Thurs. March 31.)

Employers really value communication skills. Whether it’s during the interview process or for your first promotion, you’re more likely to have the desired impact if you communicate with skill. The 2006 National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) report said: "Communication skills not only top employers' list of most-desired skills, but also their list of the skills most lacking in new college graduates...."

You need to communicate frequently and effectively so that those you interact with can hear, understand, and act upon your message the way you intend. Join this two and half hour, interactive workshop and specifically learn how to:

  • Listen
  • Understand your and others’ communication styles and how best to work with each other
  • Give and receive feedback: both positive and constructive
  • Create a compelling message that will motivate others to take action

This workshop starts by building up a few key frameworks through which to view effective and impactful communication. It then engages you in a series of experiential and interactive exercises where you practice the skills you have learned. You receive feedback on your efforts and leave with a working set of tools and concrete next steps.

The workshop facilitator, Sabina Nawaz, is an executive coach and leadership development consultant. Sabina has presented the department’s popular “IT Technical Interview Skills Workshop” for the past two years. You can visit http://www.sabinanawaz.co to learn more about her.

Note: this workshop is being offered as a pilot by the facilitator to test run some of the concepts and see how they work with a live audience. While you will learn from this workshop, the facilitator will be learning from you. As a result, we request that you take the time to provide feedback at the end of the workshop in the provided feedback form.
