What are your thoughts about AI on education, job market and society? Come and have a candid fireside chat with two of our AI/ML faculty members! Dr. Shwartz and Dr. Schmidt will share some of the advances and limitations of AI in their area of research. All alumni and friends are welcome! Submit your question as you register for the event! Dr. Vered Shwartz is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at UBC, and a CIFAR AI Chair. Her research interests are computational semantics and pragmatics, common sense reasoning, culturally-inclusive AI, vision and language, and NLP applications. Her new book, Lost in Automatic Translation, is hot off the press in August 2025.
Dr. Mark Schmidt is a Professor of Computer Science at UBC, and a CIFAR AI Chair. His work focuses on machine learning, which uses computers to automatically detect patterns in data to help make predictions and/or decisions. Mark works on a broad variety of machine learning applications.
