UBC Computer Science Professors Alan Mackworth & David Poole Release 2nd Edition of Foundational AI Textbook

UBC CS Professors David Poole and Alan Mackworth are pleased to announce the release of the second edition of their foundational AI textbook, "Artificial Intelligence: Foundations of Computational Agents".

The book has seen a complete update, with a machine learning emphasis and new resources (Python code, AIspace animations, slides, solutions, and more).  And the best news yet for students and AI practitioners is that the complete text is also available online with free open access at http://artint.info/2e/html/ArtInt2e.html.

Computer Science PhD student Nasim Zolaktaf Wins Best Student Paper Award at the 2017 DNA Computing and Molecular Programming Conference

UBC Computer Science PhD student Nasim Zolaktaf won the Best Student Paper Award at the 23rd International Conference on DNA Computing and Molecular Programming, held in Austin, Texas, September 24-28, 2017. Her paper, titled “Inferring Parameters for an Elementary Step Model of DNA Structure Kinetics with Locally Context-Dependent Arrhenius Rates,” introduces a new Arrhenius model  that can be used in stochastic simulations to estimate kinetic properties of interacting DNA strands.

Two CS Professors awarded NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplements

Professors Hu Fu and Rachel Pottinger were each awarded a 2017 NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement, valued at $120,000 over three years. These awards are for research programs that are highly rated in terms of originality and innovation, and to enable researchers to become international leaders within their field.
