Lecturer – UBC Master of Data Science program

The University of British Columbia, Vancouver invites applications for a Lecturer (one or more positions), associated with the Master of Data Science Program.  This program is a collaborative effort of the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Statistics, within the Faculty of Science. CS Professor Emeritus David Kirkpatrick Receives CS-Can/Info-Can Lifetime Achievement Award

David Kirkpatrick has won a Lifetime Achievement Award of CS-Can/Info-Can, the national organization of Canadian Computer Science Departments/Schools/Faculties. David is one of Canada's most accomplished and respected theoretical computer scientists, internationally recognized for his seminal contributions to the design and mathematical analysis of algorithms and data structures.

CS Alumnae Hasti Seifi Awarded NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship

UBC CS alumnae Hasti Seifi is awarded an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF). The NSERC PDF Program provides support to a small group of highly promising researchers at a pivotal time in their careers, and is intended to secure a supply of highly qualified Canadians with leading edge scientific and research skills for Canadian industry, government and universities. Hasti is holding the award at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany, collaborating with the UBC CS professor Karon MacLean on an international research project.

UBC Expands Tech Education with Investment from Province

An investment from the Province of British Columbia will create 624 undergraduate spaces for domestic students at UBC’s Vancouver campus for biomedical engineering, computer science, and manufacturing engineering programs to meet growing demand for talent in B.C.’s technology sector.

“We’re grateful for this investment, which enables UBC to educate more students from B.C. and across Canada to deepen the talent pool for data scientists, software developers, biomedical researchers, and manufacturing innovators in B.C. companies,” said UBC President Santa J. Ono.

Computer Science Professor Kevin Leyton-Brown's team selected as finalist for Franz Edelman Award

CS Professor Kevin Leyton-Brown's team at the Federal Communications Commission is among the six finalists selected for the prestigious Franz Edelman Award for Achievements in Operations Research and Management Science.  This international award recognizes research efforts that transform and revolutionize how we approach some of the world's most complex problems.  The award will be announced at the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research in Baltimore, MD on April 15 - 17.  More information

UBC Computer Science professors play leading role in AI 100 Report

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a disruptive technology. UBC researchers have long been leaders in the development of AI.  Recently, three UBC Computer Science professors, Holger Hoos, Kevin Leyton-Brown and Alan Mackworth, have played key roles in documenting the progress and the perils of AI. The One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI100), based at Stanford, is a 100-year effort to examine and anticipate how artificial intelligence will change our society.
