The year in review

As 2023 winds down, it causes us to pause and reflect upon our accomplishments this year within the UBC Department of Computer Science.

Every year in September, we publish an overview for the Computer Research Association of our academic year’s main highlights. It is included below.

It highlights our impressive numbers and standings, our new hires, awards and accolades, as well as some of the premier conferences for which our various faculty have published at and been asked to take chair roles.

Other notable highlights in the year:  we added a new cross-discipline research group to our department called Mathematics of Information, Learning and Data (MILD); Dr. Schmidt received an Arthur B. McDonald Fellowship; we had a whopping 11 papers accepted at the NeurIPS conference; and Dr. Ng was named “Top Academic Leader” by CDO Magazine. Notable journals and leading media outlets also published dozens of articles and interviews, citing the work of our researchers.

With the acceleration and advancements in computer science as a whole, and our continued growth, demand for department remains well-poised to support and educate those who find this industry as captivating as we do.
