I receive too many emails and am unable to respond to all of them.

  • Prospective students: The application is directly to the department with a December deadline to start in the following fall or winter (e.g. for September 2026 or January 2027, the deadline was December 2025). There is no need to inform me that you applied. Due to the volume of submissions, I'm unable to provide feedback for individual applications. I will be in touch if there is a potential fit. Please consult the department website for questions about admissions.

  • Prospective interns: I don't offer internship positions at UBC, but I occasionally recruit interns through Vector. I will review applications if I'm looking for an intern, and reach out if there is a potential fit. Note that it's recommended to list additional potential supervisors to maximize the chances of landing an internship position.

  • What if I still need to contact you or if I want to work with you in another capacity? Thank you for your interest in joining the lab. Please fill out this form so I can better understand your background and goals. I review submissions periodically and will be in touch if there is a potential fit.

  • Service for the community: I regularly review for TACL, (meta)review for ARR, and often review grant proposals or papers submitted to other venues. See my CV for a complete list of service work.
E.g., in the first 5 months of 2026 I have already reviewed 14 papers, 5 grant proposals, and have written 14 meta-reviews, in addition to my service at UBC, Vector, and CIFAR.
I acknowledge that we work in an area with ever-growing paper submissions and do my best to pay the community back for the reviews my groups receives.
Due to excess service work, I can't review for venues I do not submit work to, (largely) do not review for closed-access journals, and very sparsely accept requests to review for new venues outside my ongoing commitments for TACL and ARR.

  • Consulting: I don't have the capacity for consulting work right now. If you are certain I'd be the top person for the job, feel free to email me. Otherwise I'd probably say no.

  • General questions about NLP: Unless you are my student / collaborator or you're contacting me to ask about my research / teaching, please don't email me with general questions about NLP. Check my blog to see if I've already answered your question (if it's about NLP from the 2010s ;)).
