NESIS Mobile App Documentation

One NECSIS project that we are working on is an Android app for General Motors engineers to self-report their activities. These can be activities of any kind: activities at work, interactions with other colleagues, leisurely activities with other people or done alone, etc. The app lets each engineer capture information about an activity such as attending a meeting or taking a walk, people involved in the activity as applicable, and where the activity takes place. This information is sent to a secure server, and the user is also able to view summarized statistics on self-reported data on the phone in graph and other formats. The engineer is in control of logging the data, and we aim to make this process easy. We are including features like autocomplete, large buttons, and drop down lists preloaded with data to make reporting as hassle-free as possible. Our goal is to perform analysis on the gathered data, looking at statistics such as types of activities, activity duration, and types of people most commonly interacted with for different types of activities. We can then examine relationships between activity data and work, and collaborate with GM to suggest improvements in their software development process. We propose to lend a number of Google phones with the app to a group of GM engineers for them to use, and setup a server on-site to gather the data.

FAQ

Q: Something in the app that I think isn't working properly. Can I get a fix for it?

A: Please report bugs by emailing us--more information to come.

Q: As someone working at GM, I am concerned about the privacy of my data. Who gets to see what I log?

A: Data logged will be linked to your name, but we only store the data in the server that we set up on-site. In addition, you can edit the data that you log on your phone before sending it to the server.
