We considered delivering the course around a collection of assignments that focus on some of the areas of networking that we think every student taking a networking course should be exposed to.

  1. A client server based application. Examples:
    • Web server or proxy
    • FTP
    • Video streaming (RTP, RTSP) RFC 2326
  2. A map reduce type problem
    • tackles the problem of scale
  3. An application built upon a distributed key/value store
  4. A mobile device application that uses one or more networked data sources
    • i.e. some sort of mashup.

Issues to address in the teaching:

  • Fairness
  • Efficiency
  • Flow Control
  • Reliability
