Project: Google Maps mashup to show area-based (not point-based) data from US Census Bureau.

Challenges

• extract polygons coordinates from shapefile
• extract population data
• create semi-transparent PNG file
• aggregate data (for zooming)
• speed, speed, speed

Planned status

Extract one polygon (one census tract), extract population data for that polygon, and create a PNG file with that polygon transparently colored.

Challenges

• setting up environment
• learning libraries (gd transparency a pain)
• dynamic vs. static linking, big problem
