  • RStudio - IDE for using R
  • Shiny - A web application framework for R
  • Weka - Data mining software

Creating Publication-Quality Charts/Graphs

  • Tableau Desktop - Fine-tuned charts/dashboards (free for students)
  • ggplot2 - R package for generating elegant static charts

Diagramming and Mockups

  • OmniGraffle - diagrams, affinity diagrams, flow charts, mockups, etc. (student pricing available)
  • Balsamiq - web appplication / desktop application for generating "sketchy" static mockups ($80)
  • Axure - medium fidelity mockups / prototyping with limited interactivity (free for students)
  • Adobe Creative Cloud - Adobe's suite of design tools ($20 / month for students)

Qualitative Data Analysis

  • Dedoose - "A cross-platform app for analyzing qualitative and mixed methods research with text, photos, audio, videos, spreadsheet data and so much more." (student pricing plans available)

Transcription Software

  • oTranscribe - Online transcription tool with handy keyboard shortcuts
  • ExpressScribe - Software that supports global hotkeys for controlling the playback of the transcription, allowing you to transcribe in whatever program you prefer while still being able to control the playback with the hotkeys. You can also transcribe directly in ExpressScribe.
  • InqScribe - Highly customizable keyboard shortcuts and macros. Cheap for students. Video and Audio support.
  • f5 - Lightweight transcription software
