Faculty Association Financial Workshops

The UBC Faculty Association (http://www.facultyassociation.ubc.ca/) holds financial workshops every year. Some of those can be quite useful. For 2005, the most useful piece of information was that for the pension plan, the funds that your money goes into by default is probably not the right place for your money to go to unless you're very close to retirement. The fund is way too conservative for optimum growth. Moving money from the balanced plan (which is conservative) to the equity plan (which is more geared toward maximizing return) is probably a good idea for most younger faculty members.
