Query discovery for schema mapping
For this class we'll be discussing two papers:
-
Renée J. Miller, Laura M. Haas, Mauricio A. Hernández: Schema Mapping as Query
Discovery. VLDB 2000: 77-88. We're reading this paper to give us
a good introduction to the problem of finding queries to fill in the
details of those correspondences we've been finding so far.
-
Laura M. Haas, Mauricio A. Hernández, Howard Ho, Lucian Popa, Mary
Roth: Clio grows up: from research prototype to industrial
tool. SIGMOD Conference 2005: 805-810. We're reading this paper to
see what happens when you try to actually implement such a tool.
How to read the first paper:
- pay close attention to the key principles they're using to guide
the mapping construction (bottom of first column of the fourth page -
the page is numbered 80)
- In section 2.3, don't worry about the concept of dominance
preserving mappings - we'll be discussing that later.
The second paper should be straightforward to understand given the
caveats for the first paper.
