Hi! I'm James, and I'm a MSc student in the Software Practices Lab working with Professor Gail C. Murphy.
My research interests can be briefly described by three questions:

  1. What do developers find difficult in their day-to-day work?
  2. What tools exist (if any) to help developers tackle these difficulties?
  3. How can we build better tools or improve existing tools to help developers be more productive?
To investigate these questions, I conduct studies and ask developers lots of questions about their work (1), I keep up with and
try out existing and state-of-the-art developer tools that aim to help make software development easier (2), and get my hands
dirty by creating new tools that are designed with my findings from (1) and (2) and set them loose upon the world!

In my Master's thesis, I investigated how developers ask certain questions about the control- and data-flow paths of their
programs and developed a plugin to make asking and answering these questions easier. I evaluated the tool in a field study and
the results are in a paper that's under review. Hopefully I will be able to share more about this soon.

In my free time, I enjoy making coffee (pourover, Chemex), and taking care of various cats.
