Abstract
I’ve been thinking about this topic for 10 years now, ever since my first-year undergraduate roommate sat me down in front of the PS4 clicked a button that said “P.T.” and told me to play until I was done. I learned something in those few hours, and now I’m going to rant- I mean, discuss - the balance between scariness and stress in spooky, scary media. We’ll talk about various interactive media or experiences, just a sprinkle of psychology, and how Konami absolutely threw the biggest bag in history probably because they couldn’t give up their greed and subsequently lost their relationship with Hideo Kojima thus catapulting a little game demo into mythical status. To be clear, this talk is not about P.T., although it will be featured, I’m just still made about it. It’s just nuts you’d let an already critically acclaimed piece of media that would have involved Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro, and Junji Ito slip through your fingers like that!! It probably would have been better to just go bankrupt. Anyway, I digress. I’ll talk about some cool stuff, then we can celebrate Halloween!
