Abstract
At some point during grad school, we all come across life’s big questions. What am I doing with my research? Will my code ever compile on the first try? And most importantly—what the hell is cricket, and why are people obsessed with it for five days straight?
Hi. I'm Satvik. And I’m here to fix that last one.
In this talk, I’ll try to explain the gloriously confusing sport of cricket: how it’s played, why it takes forever, and what makes it simultaneously the most elegant and the most chaotic game ever invented. We’ll go from colonial history to modern memes, from underdog wins to match-fixing scandals, and from street cricket in Mumbai to billion-dollar stadiums. We'll also look at some of the weirdest rules that somehow still exist, the moments of greatness that give you goosebumps, and a few movies that somehow made cricket... cinematic?
No prior knowledge required. Just bring an open mind, a vague tolerance for British imperial leftovers, and maybe a cup of tea.
