Abstract
1) What do these three paintings have in common? 2) How did the public's taste in art change from this to this in less than 100 years? (And which sold for $250million 2011?)  Hint: The answer to both questions is the same. Artwork serves as a cultural barometer. Like anthropologists studying cave drawings, we can get a sense of the norms, values and ideas of previous generations by looking at the art they produced. In this talk, I hope to convince you that modernism isn't all a bunch of pretentious mumbo-jumbo and art history can, in fact, be kind of interesting.
