silhouettes
19 July 08: current front-runners:
note: grid is 2" not 1" for dorky technical reasons!

(not to scale above: cat 41", human 69", pheaux 60")
the plan: life-size plywood silhouettes of three ice age mammals in
front of museum: sabertooth, human, and pheaux. lure passersby into
museum, and photo op for posing. silhouettes painted black. they have
folding support so can be transported flat but will stand up and not
blow over on playa, sort of like easel/picture frame? (brenda is
designing, tamara is a bit clueless). design goal is that support not
visible when observer is right in front (photo-op mode), although
certainly it will be visible from the side.
the raw material:
high-res version cat+man
I vote for the middle cat hand-drawn image for sabertooth silhouette
(seirim), and right cat+human image for human silhouette, and of
course our familiar pheaux on the left not the dorky one on the right.
sizes:
- sabertooth (Smilodon fatalis): height 36 inches (enchanted/left pic) or 41 inches (wikipedia/right pic). length 4 to 5 feet, but use aspect ratio of pic.
- human (Homo sapiens): height 72 inches
- pheaux (Nothrotheriops shastensis): from eyeballing pic, height 5 ft (60 in) at shoulder?.
length 7 to 8 feet (BBC), 5 feet (on its hind legs, kokogiak) - but probably should just use aspect ratio of picture.
calculations for grids:
-
pheaux image is 750x420 pixels. eyeballing it, beast is say 15/16 of
image, so that's 394 pixels high. round to 400 pixels.
want pheaux to be 60 inches high. 400 pixels / 60 inches = 6.66
pixels/inch. round to 7 pixels/inch, for a pheaux of 57
inches. good enough. "grid -s 14" for 2-inch grid.
- man image is 542x1384. eyeballing to 1380. want to be 69 inches
high. 1380/69 = 20 pixels/inch. for 2-inch grid, need 40
pixels. "grid -s 40".
- smilodon (enchanted outline) is 416x246 pixels. beast is 7/8 of
image, eyeballing, so 215 pixels. want 41" high. 215/41 = 5.2
pixels/inch. 5 pixels/inch -> 43 inches tall, good enough. for
2-inch grid, use 10 pixels. "grid -s 10"
- smilodon (dinomusau) is 800x639, eyeballing beast is 3/4 of image
at shoulder, so 480 pixels for 41". 480/41=11.7 -> 12
pixels/inch, 2-inch grid is 24.
- sabertooth (tucci): 500x252, eyeballing beast is almost all of
image (250 pixels), 250/41 = 6.01 pixels -> 6 pixels. 2-inch
grid is 12.
- smilodon (howstuffworks) is 400x234. eyeballing beast is 7/8 of
image, so 350 pixels. 350/41 = 8.5 pixels -> 9 pixels. 2-inch
grid is 18.
- used imagemagick grid program from
http://www.fmwconcepts.com/imagemagick/grid/index.php, which
has a buffer overflow if use too many lines, sigh.
