What Goes Around...

For today's class, we will be reading two papers:

Michael Stonebraker Joseph M. Hellerstein: What Goes Around Comes Around. Readings in Database Systems, Fourth Edition Morgan Kaufmann 2005. We're reading this paper because it gives a good summary of what's happened to data models in databases over the first 40 years.
Stonebraker, Michael, and Andrew Pavlo. what Goes Around Comes Around... And Around.... ACM Sigmod Record 53.2 (2024): 21-37. We're reading this because it covers the next 20 years (which is approximately as long as I've been teaching this class so far. Oy).

This is a straightforward paper to read, so no special reading strategies are required.
