CSGSA Distributed Scavenger Hunt

Find all the items on a list with a team within a three hour time frame, wherever you are located!

Please RSVP by September 13th to be assigned to a team.

Saturday, September 19

How it works

Once you RSVP by Sunday, Sept 13th, you will be put on a team with three other UBC CS graduate students shortly after. We will try to make teams with members from all over the globe. Once you're on a team, coordinate with them to find a three (3) hour time zone on Saturday September 19th that works across timezones for all members. If Saturday does not work, a time slot on Sunday, September 20th is fine too. Then, email your time slot in PST and team name to the CSGSA (csgsa@cs.ubc.ca) by Friday, September 18th.

When your time slot starts, we will email you the list of items to be found within this timeframe. Then, it's up to you and your team to best coordinate to find all the items on the list! Ensure that each photo of an item has a team member in it, as well as a timestamp. Modern smart phones automatically timestamp photos in the metadata, but otherwise feel free to use a watch in the photo.

The items on the list are totally up to your interpretation. For example, "Something that flies that is neither a bird nor a plane" could be a butterfly, but could also be a flag! Finally, photos do not double-count for items. For example, if "A flag" was an item, a photo of a flag could not count for both the item "A flag" and "Something that flies that is neither a bird nor a plane".

When the three hour time slot is finished, coordinate with your team to upload the photos to an album that you can share with the CSGSA. Number the photos according to the numbers on the list.

Please follow the COVID19 restrictions of your individual country. Maintain physical distancing and wear a mask if mandated. We encourage you to avoid using public transportation, and instead walk or bike to find items and get your daily steps in!

What's in it for me?

This is a great opportunity to get to know students within the graduate CS department, especially those who might be far away. If you're new to an area, this is also a great way to explore where you're living. You also get to learn about places from Vancouver and UBC from your local teammate(s), and they get to learn about where you live!

You might also win! We will determine first, second, and third place teams, based on how all the teams performed. Prizes TBD, but will most likely be Amazon gift cards.
