Title: Probabilistic methods for analyzing genomic data

Abstract:

Today's wealth of biological data allows us to address several exciting questions such as: What are the functional elements encoded in a genome such as the human genome ? How does a genome regulate itself ? Which biological mechanisms make the human organism much more complex than, for example, a worm ?

It turns out that we can study many of these questions by developing and employing sophisticated, probabilistic computational methods with which we can efficiently analzyse large sets of biological data. In my presentation, I will give an introduction to the biological systems that are being studied and will introduce several methods and algorithms that we developed.
