Advanced graphics course: topics and comments
This is a suggestion to have an advanced graphics course, which is taught every year,
as a replacement for CPSC 424 and CPSC 426. Add your comments here.
counter suggestion - argue with thew dept to teach both every year:
I think this is not the way we want to go - we are as a graphics group offering less
area related courses compared to others (e.g. UVic). Reducing the count further is IMHO
not what we want. Instead what we should try to do IMHO is to try to get both courses taught
each year. I am not aware of any other 4th year courses which are taught every two years
on a regular basis. I am currently changing the pre-reqs for 424 hoping it will attract more
students (+ my impression is that if it is given every year and not every two the numbers will not
go down). 426 actually has I believe a reasonable number of students as is (compared to
other electives). So, I would actually approach curriculum ctte or who ever is in charge of these
decisions regarding teaching both every year. As I recall the problem in the past was that the dept was short
on faculty teaching undergrad, but with a whole bunch of us becoming associate and teaching more this
might not be an issue anymore.
If everyone is in favor of trying this, I would be OK with taking the lead on approaching the relevant
people in the dept. Or perhaps someone physically there can do it...
Michiel: hmmm, we really should use Google groups to have a nicely threaded discussion on this.
Sure, having the courses taught each year is indeed another option. Argument in favour:
all other CS courses are taught every year (is this true?). Argument against: the
current enrollment numbers for 424 and 426 do not make a compelling case for student demand.
All Imager faculty could also get together and do a much better job of designing and/or
simply promoting a more coherent "digital media" stream to our undergrads.
Robert: The Program Experience committee (and Raymond, as ah-ug) has it on their agenda to figure
out what the deal is with returning an every-other-year course to being offered every year.
This apparently has never happened before: usually teaching a course every-other-year is a
prelude to killing it altogether. As it stands, 426 enrolment in fall 2011 was adequate to
support continuing it but probably not big enough to make a strong case for returning it to
offering every year.
