   * Every faculty member gets $500 per year in professional development funds.  This money can be used up to 3 years later, or borrowed for up to 5 years in advance.  More details can be found at http://www.hr.ubc.ca/faculty_relations/compensation/pdrfund.html

   * NSERC (http://www.nserc.gc.ca/index.htm) is a main source of funding.  
      * The main program that faculty apply to is the Discovery program (http://www.nserc.gc.ca/professors_e.asp?nav=profnav&lbi=a1).  Tips on applying that were originally writtend by Janice Glasgow when she was on the committee and updated by Ian Witten in 1996 can be found at http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~little/glasgow-grant.pdf
      * They have other sources, but many require matching funds from industry
   * The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) (http://www.innovation.ca/index.cfm) provides funding mostly for infrastructure (e.g., large equipment, etc.)
   * the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) (http://www.nce-rce.gc.ca/index.htm) funds partnerships between university, government and industry

---+++Targetted funding for faculty
   * Microsoft has a fellowship program for new faculty (http://research.microsoft.com/ur/us/nff/) for $100,000 a year for 2 years. It's open to US and Canadian faculty members. The ligibility requirements are as of the application year you must:
      * be in your first, second, or third year as a faculty member
      * be in your first faculty position
      * be no more than 6 years from the completion of your most recent !PhD
      * be the only one nominated by your university

   * UGF fellowships: http://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/index.asp?menu=004,000,000,000 Internal to UBC.  Applications due in September.  
   * IBM fellowships: http://www.developer.ibm.com/university/scholars/fellowship/phd/ Students must be !PhD students who have completed at least one year in their !PhD program at the time of application.
   * Microsoft Research fellowships: http://www.research.microsoft.com/aboutmsr/jobs/fellowships/default.aspx  Students must be in their second or third year of a !PhD program.  Limit of 3 applications per department per year; applications must be made through the department head.
