UBC Team Wins Grand Prize at Microsoft Gaming for Education Hackathon

UBC Computer Science undergraduate students Eric Kim, Lisa Wong, Yea Han Hwang, together with UBC Engineering student Alvin Hung and SFU Engineering student Carmen Tang won first place at the Microsoft Gaming for Education Hackathon held at UBC Point Grey campus on May 23 and May 24.  Over 50 students participated in the 2-day hackathon and were coached and evaluated by Microsoft Regional Director Colin Melia and Microsoft software engineers Matthew Walsh and Jonathan Cohen.  Both Matthew and Jonathan graduated from UBC Computer Science and were delighted to come back to UBC to share their knowledge and expertise with students.

The winning team worked on a project called SuperGrid, an educational online game that allows participants to solve electrical grid multiple choice questions to bring power to hospitals.  According to the team members, their greatest achievement was 'implementing network multiplayer in Unity to allow users to challenge each other'.

Congratulations, Eric, Lisa, Yea Han, Alvin and Carmen!
