ß-Facilities

The ß-Lab, located in the CICSR Building, Room X560, provides an environment which not only facilitates and supports advanced research on topics from bioinformatics and algorithms, but which also provides space and opportunities for members of our lab to meet and socialise, to discuss their research, and to work on individual and joint projects.

Our lab environment includes computer workstations equipped with state-of-the-art PCs running Linux, a printer, and dedicated reading and working desks.

For the latest status on setting up the lab, please check our the News Section

Computing Infrastructure: Currently, we have 12 PC workstations running SuSE Linux 10.1, all equipped with 17" LCD displays. They are configured as follows:

  • agistri, alimia, amorgos, anaphi, antiparos, hydra, leros: Intel 2.4GHz Xeon (dual), 512KB cache, 1GB RAM
  • halki, ithika: Intel 1GHz Pentium III (dual), 256KB cache, 1GB RAM
  • baltimore, blobel, mcclintock: Intel 3GHz Pentium D (dual-core) CPUs , 2MB cache, 2GB RAM

We also run 6 compute servers, configured as follows:

  • saria, serifos, sikinos, skopelos, samos, sifnos: Intel 2GHz Xeon (dual), 512KB cache, 4GB RAM

Additionally, we partial use of the ICICS Computing Cluster:

  • {arsenic, boron, cesium, francium, gallium, indium, lithium, potassium, rubidium, silicon, sodium, tellurium, tin}.icics: Intel 3GHz Xeon (dual), 1MB cache, 2GB RAM

Additionally, we have a HP4050N laser jet as a local printer in the lab, as well as a UMAX Astra 2400SLT scanner (connected to imia).

The lab has also access to several notebook computers (IBM/Windows and Apple/MAX OS X machines); particularly for the convenience of notebook users, the lab provides wireless networking access.

Beta Grid Cluster with Sun N1 Grid Engine 6.0:  The beta grid cluster is buit on beta and ICICS servers to help us optimise utilisation of our computational resources. All beta workstations are configured to be able to submit jobs to the cluster. A quick tutorial is available  here.

TWiki.BETA.  A web-based collaboration area for members of the BETA Lab is available here.  It contains information about the meeting minutes, tips and tricks, research notes and discussion, etc.
