Abstract: Spoken Tutorial is a method to provide ICT train ing through 10 minute long videos created through screencast. These tutori als are created for self learning; spoken part dubbed into 22 Indian lang uages; can be used offline, which makes it accessible to students who do n't have access to Internet. We work only with open source software. Using this method, 4 million students have been trained in the past four years , in about 4,000 colleges in India, affiliated to about 100 universities, through 40,000 lab courses. It has received several awards, including Google MOOCs Focused Research Award. URL for this work: http://spoken-tu torial.org. FOSSEE stands for Free and Open Source Software for Educa tion. While Spoken Tutorial looks at training the bottom of the pyramid, FOSSEE looks at training at a higher level, and also content generation t hrough crowdsourcing. This project works in niche software tools in variou s engineering domains, some examples being Scilab, Python, eSim (electronic circuit simulation), DWSIM (chemical process flowsheeting), OpenFOA M (computational fluid dynamics), OpenModelica (general purpose modelling ), and Osdag (steel structure design). Through Textbook Companions, stud ents from across the country have generated one of the largest sources of solved examples using Scilab and Python. URL for this work: https://fossee.in. Can the above methods used to promote ICT be used to build resea rch communities? It is argued in this talk that it is indeed possible. The idea is to use an appropriate open source software to get a large number of students to contribute to an easily achievable task. What is arrived at is nothing but a version of social media. While financial incentives may help achieve low end work, higher incentives/recognition is required to m
