iGEM (international genetically engineered machines; igem.org) is an annual international synthetic biology competition in which student teams world-wide design and carry out their own project, which consists of wet lab, computational model and human practices components. Student teams work on their project from May to October before participating in the regional competitions and World Championship in November.

The UBC iGEM team had great success in 2011, advancing to World Championship, attaining Gold Medal standing and the Best Model Americas special award. This places us in excellent standing for the 2012 competition and we are now actively recruiting new team members for the 2012 team. We would like to invite computer science students to attend our information session, particularly if you have an interest in creating models with biological applications. The project focus is subject to change each year and is decided by the new team under the mentorship of graduate students and faculty. Our information session takes place on January 23rd, 6:00-7:00pm, Michael Smith Laboratories (UBC), Room 101. Please contact us for more details at ubcigem@gmail.com.
