UBC Team Wins Ericsson Global Technology Competition

UBC Computer Science students Tanha Kabir and Karan Grover, together with team members YK Sugishita and Jonathan Ho, won first place at the Ericsson Global Technology Competition.  The UBC team received the Ericsson Innovation Award, which comes with a 25,000 euros prize.  The team's software application, SoundVision, converts 3D spatial information into sounds, which could be used to assist visually impaired people to understand their surrounding environment.  A panel of judges, including experts from Ericsson and Google, chose the UBC team among 843 teams from 72 countries,

John Anvik, Lyndon Hiew, Gail Murphy Receive ICSE-10 Most Influential Paper 10 Years Later Award

Computer Science Professor Gail Murphy, together with former graduate students John Anvik and Lyndon Hiew, received the ICSE-10 Most Influential Paper 10 Years Later Award at the 2016 International Conference on Software Engineering held in Austin on May 18, 2016. The award is given to the paper presented 10 years ago that has had the most impact in the community. The paper also received a SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award at the conference held in Shanghai in 2006.

The paper title is “Who Should Fix this Bug?”.

CS Graduate Student Sarah Huber Receives Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

Computer Science graduate student Sarah Huber is the recipient of the UBC Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award.  The award is presented each year to 16 graduate students who have made outstanding contributions to teaching and learning at UBC.  The prize includes a certificate and $1,000. Oliver Schneider and Karon MacLean Partner with Disney Research to Develop Haptic Animation Tools

New technology developed at Disney Research can create touch-based (“haptic”) sensations that move across your skin, creating literal shivers down your spine. These types of effects improve user experience with games, rides, and other media, both for entertainment and for assistive or educational applications. Unfortunately, it's difficult to for artists to create haptic effects without dedicated tools.

UBC Computer Science Undergraduate Students Alice Fredine and Andrew Bates Win Archiact Game Jam

UBC Computer Science undergraduate students Alice Fredine and Andrew Bates are the winners of the Archiact VR Jam.  60 student teams from all over the Lower Mainland put together their mobile VR games over a 3-week period.  Alice and Andrew's game won the grand prize.  Their game begins by playing a song at the start of each level.  Players need to steer their spaceship through space, reconstructing the original song by colliding with musical notes along the way.

UBC Computer Science Professor Gail Murphy Elected as 2015 Fellow of Royal Society of Canada

UBC Computer Science Professor and UBC Faculty of Science Associate Dean Gail Murphy is elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, one of 87 new Fellows in total, and the only one in the field of Computer Science.  Gail has developed creative approaches for improving how software developers work. Her work on recommendation systems for software engineering has had significant impact both in research and in practice.

UBC Computer Science Department Raises Over $11,000 for Women in Computer Science

On June 28, UBC Computer Science Professor Anne Condon concluded her term as Department Head by leading a team of 28 faculty, alumni, staff, and students to participate in the Scotiabank Charity Challenge, as part of the Scotiabank Half Marathon and 5K run.  The team raised a total of $11, 286 to fund programs aiming at increasing diversity and gender balance in Computer Science
