Computer Science Professor Joanna McGrenere Inducted into RSC's College of New Scholars, Artists & Scientists

Congratulations to UBC Computer Science Professor Joanna McGrenere, who is inducted into the Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.  The scholars were selected based on excellence in intellectual leadership in their field of research.  Joanna is recognized as one of the top mid-career scholars in Canada in the field of Computer Science. There were 70 new scholars elected.

Computer Science Undergraduates Alice Fredine & Scott Henry Win Best Presentation at CUCSC

Computer Science students Alice Fredine and Scott Henry were awarded Best Presentation at the 2017 Canadian Undergraduate Computer Science Conference. Their presentation was on Social Assistive Chatbots, examining how technology can be used to empower introverts’ communication. The research was developed during CPSC 444, Advanced Human Computer Interaction, taught by Joanna McGrenere.

Computer Science Lecturer Jessica Dawson Receives Killam Teaching Prize

UBC Computer Science Lecturer Jessica Dawson is the recipient of a 2016-2017 UBC Faculty of Science Killam Teaching Prize, UBC’s most prestigious teaching award.  This award recognizes outstanding contributions to improving the teaching and learning environment in our undergraduate programs, and is awarded to a small handful of faculty members in Science each year.

UBC Student Jennifer She Receives CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Honourable Mention

UBC student Jennifer (Xin Bei) She received 2016 CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award.Honourable Mention.  Jennifer is a 4th year student in the Combined Computer Science and Statistics Honours program. She is working with Computer Science Professor Mark Schmidt and Statistics Professor Jiahua Chen in areas of machine learning and statistics, and has broad interests in those areas.

UBC Computer Science Professor Alla Sheffer, together with Professor   Karan Singh from University of Toronto, received $125,000 of research funding from the NSERC Idea to Innovate (I2I) Program.

UBC Computer Science Professor Cristina Conati and Her Colleagues Win 2016 IVA Best Paper Award

UBC Computer Science Professor Cristina Conati, postdoc Sebastien Lalle, and their colleagues from North Carolina State University, won the 2016 Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents.  The paper, titled 'Impact of Individual Differences on Affective Reactions to Pedagogical Agents Scaffolding', explores how understanding students' emotions could be used to design more emphatic and personalized pedagogical agents that could adapt to students' learning goals and personality traits.

Tech Career Talks for High School Girls

On Wednesday, August 31, UBC Computer Science partnered with Amazon Women in Engineering to host over one hundred high school girls at Amazon Vancouver.  The event was spearheaded by Rebecca McKnight, a former GIRLsmarts4tech coordinator and UBC Computer Science alumnae, who is now a Software Development Engineer at Amazon Vancouver.  The goal of this event was to encourage these young women to pursue technical education after high school.
