GIRLsmarts Workshops Celebrated its 11th year by Reaching Out to Grade 7 Girls

2014 marked the 11th year since the inception of the GIRLsmarts program, and the three workshops that were offered this year were a phenomenal success.  Coordinators Hasti Seifi, Natasha Jaques and Arianne Dee led a team of 55 student volunteers to provide two full days of programming activities for 160 Grade 6 girls on UBC Vancouver campus. Participants got a chance to try out fun activities on topics ranging from robotics and user-interface design, to programming their own games using Scratch, and building web pages with HTML.

CPSC 110 Challenge Exam

What is it?

If you believe you already know the material covered in CPSC 110, you can apply to challenge the course. You will be required to write a challenge exam and, assuming you obtain a sufficiently high grade, you will be given the option of accepting credit for CPSC 110. This credit will count towards your graduation requirements exactly as if you had taken the course in the usual way.

Taking GIRLSmarts Workshop to Downtown Eastside

Girlsmarts 2012

Riding on the success of the 2011 GIRLsmarts workshops, UBC CS graduate students Sarah Rastka, Anika Mahmud and Mona Haraty expanded the workshops this year to downtown eastside.  The three coordinators brought a group of volunteers to the UBC Learning Exchange on Main Street and offer interactive activities to Grade 6 girls from East Vancouver schools.  Participants learn to build their own websites using html and make their own games and animation using Kudo.
