Abstract
What better way to spend Friday the 13th than to hear a bit about the latest literary spooktacular? As a longtime fan of genre fiction, I’ve found the extent to which people of our generation (and undergrads) have embraced the intersection of romance and fantasy novels pretty fascinating. I’ll fault in some material from my days as an English major to paint the backdrop of how the genre developed, from Emily Bronte to John Norman, enumerate some often-encountered tropes, and maybe even make myself feel better about my own sub-par writing by quoting some particularly hilarious passages from some popular novels.
