Did Medieval Disasters Cause Modern Technical Progress?

Abstract
In the beginning of the 14th century severe disasters struck Europe such as the Great Famine and the Black Death pandemic. However, it seems that without such dreadful events we might not have many achievements of the modern technology and society as we have them today. Why? This lecture will attempt to answer this question.
