Medical ontology matching

We'll be covering two papers in this class, both about matching the same set of anatomy ontologies. These papers appeared in AMIA, a medical informatics conference.

S. Zhang and O. Bodenreider Aligning representations of anatomy using lexical and structural methods. In: AMIA; 2003. p 753 - 757. This paper describes how two particular medical ontologies were matched. This match was created by people who are more from the medical side. It's interesting to note what they found interesting.
Peter Mork, Rachel Pottinger, and Philip Bernstein. Challenges in Precisely Aligning Models of Human Anatomy Using Generic Schema Matching. Proceedings of MedInfo, IMIA, 2004. This paper was written about the same time as the previous paper, but published a year later. It uses a more generic approach to merge the same ontologies and provides a contrast to the methods, what works, and what doesn't.

Both papers should be easy to read... unless you decide you really want to understand the human anatomy.
