Personal History I started off in Britain, born and brought up in Wokingham, Berks, and going to school in Reading until I was 18. Life was filled with the usual mix of schoolwork, sport, music, dogs, and computers. I then went to the University of York to do my batchelors degree in computer science, following it with a PhD at the same university. I also had a year in Coventry during my undergrad degree, working for Marconi Communications, and spent a year in Ipswich at BT Research Labs during my PhD. I came over to Vancouver, BC, at the beginning of January 2003, and so far, even though the novelty of living in another country has worn off, it's a lovely place to live. During my final year as an undergrad I took up archery and fencing, which made life a bit more hectic, and can be read about on the activities page. My PhD years seemed to revolve around work, training, and tournaments, punctuated with the odd trip to see friends and family. Life in Vancouver was initially filled mainly with work. I was working at UBC during the day and finshing my thesis in the evening (with some fencing added for a brief respite). That period is finally over and I've been able to get back to archery and other things that consitute a 'normal' life, although it got slightly skewed when I was asked to lecture but I'm settling back in now. The people are friendly and polite, and have finally stopped asking me where I come from, the scenery is fantastic, the prices are....not as cheap as I would have expected, but pretty good for most things. And the infamous rain? Well, we don't get it every day.. | ||
