This KLA is transcribed from the SIGCSE 2004 Special Session on KLAs.

Overview To KLA

Designed by Joe Bergin

Summary: Learn the XP planning game

Learning Goals: to be added

Course And Level: This is appropriate for a sophomore or higher class level.

Class Size: The class should be between 10-30 people.

Preparation Time: One hour of preparation time is needed.

Execution Time: The exercise will take 4 hours and one hour of debriefing is also needed.

Planning For KLA

Materials: Play dough, paper, glue, scissors (kindergarten art supplies), 3X5 cards, and pens.

Preparation: The instructor must first talk about XP.

Execution Of KLA

Description: Designate a "customer" who writes "features" on cards for a "product." "Developers" estimate how long to build in minutes. "Customer" then prioritizes cards (some, not all). Developers build just those features. Iterate many times. Example: If the customer wants a "castle." The features are a "moat, 12 high walls, and dragon."

Variants And Extra Topics: below

Use lego mindstorms
Mine patterns target the practice

Constraints On KLA

Would your KLA work if your students had the following constraints:
Limited Vision: (including color-blindness) Few
Limited Hearing: Few
Limited Mobility: Few
Trouble Speaking: Many
Touch Aversion: (including cultural) Many

Pitfalls Of KLA

Need a long debrief afterwards as they will make lots of "mistakes" regarding XP.
