A discussion of the evolution of Copyist and QuickScore, the first a page-oriented music layout program and the second a track-oriented notation-based sequencer. How the development of Copyist helped solve problems of graphic representation of musical elements and the development of QuickScore helped solve problems of score layout, interactivity, flexibility and musical playback. The representation and organization of music data in both programs will be discussed.
