for Evaluating Presentations
Clip Art and Images and Fonts and Movies
Clip Art and Images
- How
to Scale Bitmaps and Movies for Better Slide
Shows
- PowerPoint inserts images and movies into slide
shows at a size that does not result in one pixel of the image/movie
appearing as one pixel of the slide show. This means that small
details may get lost, or that PowerPoint has to do extra work (because
of the non-integral scaling) and can seriously ruin movie playback.
For most images this this not a big deal, for all movies it is. You
need to tell PowerPoint to use the "best scale for slide show" and
what resolution you're using on your display (Start>Control
Panels>Display>Settings). This Knowledge Base article discusses how
to tell PowerPoint what it needs to know.
- "Set
Transparent Color" Tool Leaves Ragged Border Around Foreground
Image
- The Set Transparent Color tool on the Picture
Toolbar cannot compensate for "fuzzy bordered" images that blend
smoothly from the foreground to the background. If you've tried to
use this tool and were disappointed with the results, because it only
picks ONE AND ONLY ONE COLOUR to set as transparent, read this
Knowledge Base article. It discusses how to use PhotoDraw to set the
transparency of the picture's pixels.

systems. You may order directly from us. Doing so assures that you

- Nerd, sex kitten or professional? Lexmark study reveals
what computer fonts say about you.
- Though the study "Social and Emotional Connotations of Fonts" focuses on letters and reports, perhaps there is something here for your next presentation.
-
Lose Fonts to Find Speed
- In this article and downloadable utility, learn how to speed up your computer and reduce time wasted scrolling through hug lists of fonts by removing from your system fonts you don't use. Checks all files on your computer. Allows you to preview and print examples of all font faces. Link to downloadable utility.

Creating
Equations (Latex)
- Mathematics on the
Web: A Status Report
- You may have noticed that typesetting
mathematical equations is generally difficult to do. Latex is hard to
learn, PowerPoint relies on plug-ins (Equation Editor), and web pages
are really hard. Design Science, the creator of MathType and Equation
Editor, reviews the state of math on the web from equation typesetting
to demonstration applets. Published twice a year. The January 2001
issue focused on standards for math on the web. The July 2001 issue
focused on distance learning which requires the ability to
typeset equations.
