   ASSIGNMENT 0 - Question/Comment on Each Reading

Due: by 9:00 PM the night before readings are covered in class. This is a strict cutoff. (Note: I reserve the right to change this time within the term)

Students must do the core readings before the lectures. By the due date/time, students must send me an email with a set of questions/comments about the material being covered that day, one per required reading (typically 2 per class, but can be more or less). I encourage you to also bring a printout of these questions with you to class and use them as a springboard for discussion. Your email must have the subject line:

Subject: 554m submit Cnum

where num is the class number (as given on the schedule page).

e.g. Subject: 554m submit C3

Please do not include your name at the end of the email. [When I read through printouts, I hide the email headers and review the submissions as though they were sumbitted anonymously.]

Your submitted questions/comments should be thoughtful, and clearly show that you have done the reading and reflected on it. They do not all have to be phrased in the form of a question, a comment is fine. If you are genuinely confused by some aspect of the reading, then it is useful and legitimate to ask for clarification. However, simply asking something that you could trivially look up yourself is not a good question. As with any written work that you hand in, I expect correct grammar and spelling.

Each question/comment will initially be graded on a scale of {great, good, ok, poor}, and I will provide feedback. Some examples will be forthcoming.

Part way through the term, once students have the hang of this assignment, I will switch the scale to {good, ok, poor} and I will provide relatively little feedback. I will let you know when the switch happens.

Each question/comment should be at most one short paragraph. Often two or three sentences will suffice. The goal is to have short, crisp questions/comments. Marks will be docked for excessive length.

I will drop each student's lowest 3 grades. Thus, you can essentially choose not to do this assignment for 3 of the readings. Choose these wisely.

Unless othewise arranged with me, your questions/comments will not be accepted after the due date/time.
