Class #1

The objective of this class is to introduce you to the use of video in HCI studies. You'll become familiar with video equipment and will learn how to use and setup a video camera.

Before the class, you will need to:

• You will need one mini DV tape per team as well as one set of headphones during the classes.
• Ensure that at least one team member has a working account in X360.
• Skim the Video Camera Operating Manual according to our condensed video camera user manual.
• Read parts of Using Video to Support Interaction Design by Wendy Mackay
  • read pages 3-9 ("Overview" and "Interviews: Observing Users") and pages 30-35 ("Video Tips" and "Ethical Guidelines").
• Optional reading: The Role of the Video Professional In a Research Environment by Mark D. Chow

Class #2

The objectives of this class are to familiarize you with basic non-linear video editing techniques.

• Within Adobe Premier Elements 2.0 you will be able to:
  • Import clips
  • Cut and move clips
  • Add a title title
  • Add a transition
  • Add audio to video
  • Export Clips
• In addition, you will gain some intuition regarding what makes a good vs. bad video.

Before this class, your group will need to:

• Pick one of your videos from the first class to use in this class (if you shot more than one video). One person in the group will need to be responsible for bring in the video (on mini DV) to class. You will also need to bring headphones, two pairs would be ideal.
• Start thinking about how you want to organize your ~1 minute edited video. If you want to add music to your video you will need to bring it to the tutorial as an mp3.

• Pre-read the following document on producing research videos: http://www.chi2006.org/guide_video.php Note: This document is intended for submissions to the CHI conference, and as such some of the details (such as file formating requirements) are not relevant to this course. You should be focusing on the general suggestions for what makes a good video.
• Pre-read the following video editing tutorials from Media College. Many of these tutorials are spread across multiple pages; A complete listing of all the individual subpages is available here for your reference.
  • Introduction to Video Editing (4 pages)
  • (Optional): Linear (Tape to Tape) Video Editing (8 pages)
  • Non-Linear (Computer) Video Editing (6 pages)
  • Video Transitions (1 page)
• Familiarize yourself with these resources:
  • Adobe Premiere Elements 8 Manual (The Help Manual serves as a reasonable introduction to Premiere Elements. Students should skim the following sections: Capturing Video, Importing and Adding Media, Arranging Clips in a Movie, Editing Clips, and Applying Transitions. These are  Chapters 4, 5, 7-9 in the "Help PDF" version, available at the top left.)
  • Adobe TV's tutorials for Premiere Elements 8 (These tutorials are more advanced than the introductory material above. The tutorials/videos "Mixing Audio" and "Exporting Video Files" will be relevant.)
