Research methodology critiques.
Marking scheme: 5% each (25% of grade total)
Due dates: February 5, 12, March 5, 12, April 2
At beginning of class on the due dates, submit a 2-3 page research methodology critique. Suitable papers from the required readings are indicated with a *. Critiques must be submitted before the paper is discussed in class. For April 2nd (or if desired for earlier critques) you may choose a paper that is relevant to your research interests, send Kirstie an email with a link to the paper for approval.
Your critique should include:
- a brief description of the study's methodological approach
- your analysis of the strengths and benefits of this approach (what they identified and what you know)
- discussion of the appropriateness of this approach for the research question under investigation
- discussion of how their findings were impacted by their approach or their specific data collection choices
- identification of a complementary approach that would limit the biases and increase understanding of user behaviours
- discussion of how such an approach would do so
Critiques will be graded according to:
- professionalism (well-written, lack of typos, ideas clearly presented)
- depth of analysis (thoroughly examining each point)
- demonstration of understanding of concepts (convincing discussion of methodological choices grounded in course materials)
- original thought (going beyond paraphrasing what the authors discuss in the paper)
