Assignment 1: Write an experiment report

This is a marked individual assignment.

Each student will submit an experiment report based on the two tutorials covering soft keyboard typing experiments. (Thus, this is an individual assignment based on group work.)

Estimated time to complete: 3-4 hours

This report should follow the style specified in the document How to structure reports on experiments in human-computer interaction. You can use some of the material from the tutorials, such as the experiment description (ExptI_Procedure.doc), in your report (but in your own words). Do not copy out the method or exact instructions; you can refer to the procedure document given to you in the last tutorial instead. Your TA may give you additional information, and you are expected to flesh out your report where necessary.

Your report should also include the following:
  • Although the Introduction section can be largely based on the assignment background (ExptI_Background.doc), you should have 1-2 new references to strengthen your discussion of relevant literature, giving the reader an idea of what other research results have shown. Typing "soft keyboards" into scholar.google.com is a good place to start.
  • In the Results section, you should include the complete ANOVA Summary table your group generated for each dependent variable (speed and error). This is the bottom table on the generated spreadsheet. You should, of course, also report any important descriptive statistics (e.g., mean and standard deviations).
  • The majority of the marks will be assigned based on your interpretation of what the results mean. You should discuss this with your group, and think about it, in particular: the impact your findings have on the application constraints described in the experiment background document, the general use of soft keyboards, the implications to other practitioners, your critical reflections, and a research agenda of future study and issues. Use both the qualitative and quantitative findings of your study.
Page limit: 4 pages, including tables and figures.

Use the following formatting:

  • Single-spaced, 12 point font
  • 1" margins
  • Double-sided pages
  • Page numbers

In addition to the hardcopy handed in at the beginning of tutorial, you should submit a PDF version via handin. The assignment name is assign_experiment. Please include you last name in the filename (e.g. parker_assign_experiment.pdf).

Due date: Check the course schedule for due date.

Note: There is a third tutorial on experiments which is designed to help you with your assignment. The value of that tutorial will be much greater if you attempt a first draft of this report before the tutorial.
