UBC CS Coffee Club

Greetings, and welcome to the UBC Computer Science Coffee Club home page! The Coffee Club provides self-serve coffee in the 8th floor lounge (ICICS X860). Everybody in the department is welcome to join.

How to join

There are sheets posted on the wall by the coffee machine with the names of coffee club members. If your name is not on the list, simply add it in one of the blank spaces at the end, and include your email address.

Getting a coffee or tea

To get a Flavia coffee or specialty tea, take the Flavia packet of your choice from one of the drawers in the black coffee/tea cabinet and follow the directions below for using the Flavia machine.

To get a Nespresso, take a packet of your choice from the Nespresso cardboard box and follow the directions below for using the Nespresso machine.

For ordinary Lipton tea, simply take a Lipton tea bag from the box beside the black cabinet and add hot water.

Then fill in the appropriate bubble (Flavia or Tea) beside your name. Each name has three rows of bubbles, one each for Flavia, Regular (Lipton) Tea, and Milk. The Milk bubbles are not currently in use; milk and cream are free to add to your coffee or tea.

Using the Flavia machine

The following steps augment and correspond to the directions on the sheet posted by the Flavia machine.
  1. If your mug is tall, you can temporarily remove the base to fit your mug under the spout. The start button is the forward top edge of the machine.
  2. Insert your Flavia packet as illustrated, and make sure that the neck of the packet locks into position. If using a hot chocolate ("Choco") packet, press the > button on top of the machine so the light indicates "CHOCO".
  3. While pressing the start button, make sure the packet slot doesn't pop out.
  4. The machine should finish its cycle with a whoosh of steam. Let me know if it doesn't.
  5. Dispose of the spent packet in the Flavia packet recycle bin on the right.
  6. Check the water level indicator on the right of the machine. If it is low, add more using the coffee carafe near the black cabinet. You can open up the water container by pressing the button in the top center behind the start button.

Using the Nespresso machine

The following notes augment the directions on the posted Nespresso instructions. The posted Nespresso instructions are also contained in the following PDFs:
