To provide good ground for the discussion,
participants must :
send (at least 3) questions
on the assigned readings to the class
mailing list, cpsc503@cs.ubc.ca, by 4pm of
the day before the class. Clarification
questions are welcome,
but
participants should also try
to ask questions that address weaknesses in the presented research,
that
relate the research to general issues in the field or that make
connections/comparisons
with topics covered in class.
hand in
a brief summary of each reading in class. The
paper summary should address the
following points.
Beside improving participation to the
discussion, the objective
of
this activity is to help participants learn how to read papers with
a critical eye, as a reviewer for a conference or journal would do. For more instructions on how to read a research paper, see http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~conati/532b/reading-eval.html
In addition to the quality of
the
summary/questions,
punctuality
in emailing them will be taken into account for marking.
When the paper is assigned to you You are required to present the
paper in class and to lead the
discussion. We'll have 40min for each paper, 20 min. for the
presentation and 20 min. for discussion (the two can mix)
In the presentation you have to:
summarize the paper
structure
and propose answers to the questions posed by the rest of the
class.
If you want to use powerpoint in your presentation just
let me know and I'll bring a projector. Also, if you want to use
powerpoint and you do not have your own laptop, just send me your
presentation at least 45min before class.
