Philippe Beaudoin
Software Engineer, Google

In late 2010 I discovered the wonderful world of open source development, contributing on Google Chrome and initiating two popular projects: GWTP and jukito. This gave me the opportunity to consult on the very cool web project BookedIN. I also launched ArcBees, a startup building on the popularity of GWTP. In the final twist of a rollercoaster year, my family and I moved back to Montreal in early 2011 where I got hired by Google as a software developer.

I spent most days prior to 2010 haunting the halls of various universities. Kicking it off with three years of engineering studies at École Polytechnique in Montreal, followed by a B.Sc. in mathematics and computer science topped by some research work in theoretical and quantum computing. To wrap it all up, I completed an M.Sc. in Computer Graphics at Université de Montréal.

In the lull between my masters and PhD, I sampled the "outside world", working first as an ASIC engineer at Matrox where I had the rare opportunity to glance at the inner workings of an advanced graphics chip. I then spent two years at Digital Fiction, a Montreal video game startup.

But the dark side of the force is strong and I had to go back to complete my training! So, in September 2003, I knocked on Pierre Poulin's door and he accepted me as his Ph.D. student. Four years later it led to a thesis in motion capture data analysis and compression.

In summer 2006 I had the opportunity to visit professor Michiel van de Panne at UBC's Imager lab. We started collaborating on various interesting topics tangentially related to my Ph.D. and obtained very promising results. Promising enough to justify a post-doc. So, at the beginning of 2008, I moved to Vancouver, where I spent three very happy years with my wife and two children.

All through these years, I had the chance to work on a wide range of projects leading to a number of patents, peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. My post-graduate studies and post-doc have been made possible by scholarships from various institutions including NSERC, FQRNT, and Université de Montréal.
