Adventures of the Virtual Family

@ Terry Fox School in Port Coquitlam

After the Virtual Family met the grade nine girls at Technology Time Travelers 2006, they were very excited about going to new places and meeting new people.  Their next excursion was a trip out to Terry Fox High School in Port Coquitlam to see a good friend of theirs, Maria Callas.  Maria is an enthusiastic Information Technology teacher at Terry Fox, who thought it would be fantastic if some teachers of those grade nine girls who went to the PDC for Technology Time Travelers 2006 could meet the Virtual Family for themselves.  So, she organized a series of Professional Development Day sessions for teachers that was like a mini Technology Time Travelers day.

Everyone was there, including James Lau, Janice, and Peggy from IBM, and Maria (it was a little confusing to have TWO Marias!), Grace, and Vania from SWIFT.  Not only that, but the two newest SWIFTers decided to join the family for the first time on this day - Katie, the new Virtual Family Nanny, and Jocelyn, the new SWIFTer at the PDC, were just as nervous and excited as the family had been on its first adventure.

The day was divided in half, with workshops for one group of teachers in the morning, and another in the afternoon.  Each group got to pretend that they were grade nine girls, just beginning to explore the exciting world of Information Technology.  They went through the same activities that their students did at the PDC, including playing Phoenix Quest, programming with the Virtual Family, and having a talk with Maria Klawe and James Lau about how Information Technology fits into every career from biology to ballet dancing.
