Adventures of the Virtual Family

@ BCIT in Burnaby

The Ms. Infinity Conference is an annual event at locations around British Columbia organized by SCWIST with the help of local community members.  In this day-long, fun-filled event, grade nine and ten girls interested in Science and Technology participate in a variety of workshops and lecture sessions.  On May 31, 1999, at BCIT in Burnaby, Virtual Family made its Ms. Infinity debut.

Katie, Grace, and a volunteer SWIFTer named Ravenna rushed about setting up Virtual Family on the lab's 30 or so computers... unfortuneately, they had a slow start due to security issues (they were told when they first arrived that they might not be able to install software on the BCIT computers!), and were still running about as the girls began to arrive.  Katie let Grace and Ravenna finish off the installation on the computers that still needed it, and began to introduce the girls to the Virtual Family...  Due to the lack of preparation time, the family wasn't quite on its best behaviour in the morning - Sis was mad that she had been woken from her beauty sleep, and Junior was a little cranky.  The girls didn't mind too much though - they still managed add some new actions and to learn about programming in Java.

In the afternoon workshop, Virtual Family was ready and waiting to meet the girls.  Since she didn't have to run around so much, the Virtual Family Nanny was much more relaxed this time, and she was very pleased with the Family's behaviour - even Junior was acting like an angel in the afternoon!  The girls were very enthusiastic about programming and IT - it was a room filled with computer scientists in the making!
